Walking the Kokoda Track: Why This Journey Changes People Forever

The Kokoda Track is more than a trek through Papua New Guinea. It is a journey of courage, resilience, history and personal transformation.

Every year, thousands of people from around the world walk the Kokoda Track seeking something different.

Some come to challenge themselves physically.

Some come to honour the Australian soldiers who fought there.

Some come searching for clarity, purpose or a deeper connection with themselves and others.

But after more than three decades guiding people across Kokoda, I have learned one thing:

People rarely finish the Kokoda Track as the same person who started it.

The mountains, villages, rivers and battlefields do more than test your physical endurance.

They reveal your character.

They challenge your mindset.

They remind you of what you are capable of achieving.

What Makes the Kokoda Track So Special?

The Kokoda Track is one of the world's most iconic wilderness journeys.

Located in Papua New Guinea, the track stretches approximately 96 kilometres from the village of Kokoda to Owers' Corner near Port Moresby.

But Kokoda is not simply a hiking experience.

It is a place where history, culture, nature and personal challenge come together.

The track follows the footsteps of Australian and Papua New Guinean soldiers who endured some of the most difficult conditions of the Second World War during the 1942 Kokoda Campaign.

Those who walk Kokoda today do so with respect for the sacrifices made by the soldiers, carriers and communities who supported them.

The physical journey is challenging.

The emotional journey is often even greater.

Why Do People Walk the Kokoda Track?

People choose to trek Kokoda for many different reasons.

Some want to achieve a personal goal.

Some want to step outside their comfort zone.

Some want to reconnect with family or friends.

Some are seeking a defining life experience.

Some want to better understand the history of the Kokoda Campaign.

Others simply feel called to experience one of the world's great walking adventures.

Whatever the reason, most trekkers discover something unexpected.

The Track becomes a mirror.

It shows you how you respond when things become difficult.

The Physical Challenge of Kokoda

Walking the Kokoda Track requires preparation.

The terrain is demanding.

Trekkers experience:

  • Steep mountain climbs
  • Humidity and heat
  • River crossings
  • Uneven jungle tracks
  • Long days of walking
  • Limited comforts
  • Physical fatigue

The famous climbs of Kokoda test endurance and determination.

But the greatest challenge is often not the distance.

It is managing the conversation inside your own mind.

When fatigue arrives, people discover an important truth:

The body is often capable of more than the mind believes.

The Psychology of Walking Kokoda

As a Master-qualified counsellor and expedition leader, I have seen thousands of people experience the psychological impact of Kokoda.

The Track teaches lessons that cannot be learned in a classroom.

It teaches:

Resilience

Resilience is not about avoiding difficulty.

It is about learning that you can face difficulty and continue moving forward.

Every step becomes evidence:

"I can do hard things."

"I can adapt."

"I can overcome challenges."

Self-belief

Many trekkers begin Kokoda questioning whether they are capable.

By the end, they have proof.

They have climbed mountains.

They have endured discomfort.

They have supported others.

They have achieved something they once thought was impossible.

That changes how people see themselves.

Perspective

Modern life can become consumed by deadlines, technology and constant demands.

Kokoda strips life back to what matters.

Walk.

Eat.

Rest.

Support your team.

Keep going.

Many people return home with a renewed appreciation for relationships, health and purpose.

The Leadership Lessons of Kokoda

Kokoda is also one of the world's greatest leadership classrooms.

On the Track, leadership is not about position or title.

It is about service.

The best leaders are the ones who:

  • Notice when someone is struggling
  • Encourage others
  • Remain calm under pressure
  • Put the team before themselves
  • Lead by example

These lessons apply directly to workplaces, sporting teams, families and communities.

A difficult journey reveals authentic leadership.

Why Kokoda Builds Stronger Relationships

One of the most powerful aspects of the Kokoda Track is the connection it creates between people.

Shared challenges create trust.

Walking alongside someone for eight days creates conversations that may never happen in everyday life.

Around the campfire.

During a difficult climb.

While supporting someone who is struggling.

The experience creates a bond because people have shared something meaningful.

This is why many Kokoda trekkers maintain friendships long after the journey ends.

Preparing for the Kokoda Track

A successful Kokoda experience requires preparation in three areas:

Physical Preparation

Training should include:

  • Long-distance walking
  • Hill climbing
  • Strength endurance
  • Pack carrying
  • Mobility and recovery

Kokoda is not just about fitness.

It is about preparing your body for repeated effort over many days.

Mental Preparation

The right mindset is essential.

Trekkers should expect:

  • Discomfort
  • Fatigue
  • Uncertainty
  • Moments of doubt

The goal is not to eliminate these experiences.

The goal is to develop the confidence to handle them.

Emotional Preparation

Kokoda often brings up unexpected emotions.

The environment encourages reflection.

Many people find themselves thinking about:

  • Their relationships
  • Their priorities
  • Their purpose
  • Their future

Being open to that process is part of the journey.

More Than a Trek: A Journey of Transformation

Many adventure experiences focus on what people achieve.

Kokoda is different.

It focuses on who people become.

The distance walked matters.

The mountains climbed matter.

The history experienced matters.

But the greatest transformation happens internally.

People discover courage they didn't know they had.

They reconnect with what matters.

They develop confidence through experience.

They return home with a different perspective.

Why I Continue to Lead People Across Kokoda

After more than 30 years, people often ask why I continue returning to the Track.

The answer is simple.

Because Kokoda reveals the best of people.

I have watched:

  • Parents reconnect with their children.
  • Leaders discover a different way of leading.
  • Athletes develop mental resilience.
  • First responders find renewed purpose.
  • Individuals overcome challenges they never thought possible.

The Track does not give people something they don't already possess.

It reveals what was there all along.

Courage.

Strength.

Compassion.

Resilience.

Purpose.

Is Walking the Kokoda Track Right for You?

Kokoda is not an ordinary holiday.

It is not simply a walking adventure.

It is a challenge.

A history lesson.

A personal journey.

A test of resilience.

A chance to step away from everyday life and discover what you are capable of.

The question is not:

"Can I walk Kokoda?"

The better question is:

"Who could I become by walking it?"
