The Kokoda Track: 30 Years of Witnessing Growth on Sacred Ground
By Aidan Grimes

Over the past 30 years, I’ve guided thousands of Australians across the rugged terrain of Papua New Guinea’s Kokoda Track. But I haven’t just seen people walk 128 kilometres — I’ve witnessed something far deeper. I’ve seen transformations. Lives redefined. Young men and women rediscover their inner strength. Veterans find healing. Everyday people step into a part of themselves they didn’t know existed.

Resilience Forged in the Mud
The Kokoda Track is relentless. The mud sucks at your boots. The rain is unforgiving. The climbs seem endless. But through every hardship, people rise. I’ve watched individuals — from teenagers to CEOs — push through blistered feet, fatigue, and mental barriers. Somewhere along the trail, something shifts. They realise they’re stronger than their excuses. Kokoda doesn’t give resilience; it reveals it.

Fitness of Body, Mind, and Spirit
Trekking Kokoda is demanding. The physical preparation is serious, and the journey will test every part of your body. But the fitness that truly matters isn’t just physical — it’s mental. Kokoda builds what I call ‘quiet strength’: the ability to keep moving forward when no one’s watching, when the only one urging you on is yourself.

A Living History Lesson
You don’t just learn history on Kokoda — you walk through it. The stories of courage, mateship, sacrifice, and endurance from 1942 echo through the mountains and jungle. I’ve seen trekkers brought to tears at Brigade Hill, or standing silently in the Bomana War Cemetery, eyes fixed on a headstone bearing a young soldier’s name. The Track gives historical context to our freedom and a visceral connection to the past that no textbook ever could.

The Power of Achievement
There’s nothing quite like reaching Owers Corner. The arch isn’t just a photo opportunity — it’s a symbol. Of everything you’ve overcome, everything you’ve discovered. I’ve seen people hug their teammates, fall to their knees, or simply stand in silent pride. The sense of achievement is monumental — and it stays with them for life.

Camaraderie That Lasts a Lifetime
On the Kokoda Track, people drop their titles and egos. You share tents, stories, and struggles. I’ve seen strangers become teammates, and teammates become lifelong friends. There’s something about sweating, laughing, and suffering together that forges bonds stronger than any corporate team-building day could.

The Discovery of Self-Efficacy
Self-efficacy is the belief in your own ability to succeed — and Kokoda is a masterclass in it. Every obstacle faced and conquered on the Track is a reminder: I can do hard things. I’ve seen this belief ripple into people’s lives post-Kokoda — they change careers, repair relationships, get fit, or take on new challenges. They know what they’re capable of.

30 Years of Stories
I could fill books with the moments I’ve witnessed. The father and son who healed a broken bond. The teenager who arrived closed-off and left a leader. The veteran who walked out his demons, one muddy step at a time.

Kokoda is more than a track. It’s a mirror, a crucible, a test, and a homecoming all rolled into one. After 30 years, I still believe in its power more than ever.

If you’re ready to learn who you truly are — or who you could be — I’ll see you on the Track.

Lest We Forget.
